Gum Disease – The Most Common Dental Problem

Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems in adults and also the leading cause of tooth loss. Also known as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissue and bone that supports the teeth. Untreated gum disease can become very serious and cause tooth loss or loss.

If you have braces, plaque can be more difficult to remove. Additionally, certain medical conditions (including diabetes and Down's syndrome) and some medications increase the risk of gum disease

If plaque is not removed from the teeth and gums with good daily dental care, the plaque will harden over time into a crust called tartar. Once the tartar forms, it begins to damage the gum tissue, causing the gums to bleed and separate from the teeth.

This is known as periodontal disease, which is a more advanced form of gum disease. Gums weaken and form pockets around the base of the teeth. Inside these pockets, the bacteria fuse and cause further damage to the gums.

As it spreads, it damages deeper gum tissue and can eventually spread to the area of the jawbone that supports the teeth. This can lead to loosening and loss of teeth.

Call your dentist if you see any of these gum tissue signs.
